An Overview of the Holiday Farm Fire

The Holiday Farm Fire was one of the largest in Oregon’s history. The fire began on September 7, 2020, west of the McKenzie Bridge toward Vida on Highway 126. It burned a total of 173,393 acres, and thousands of people were forced to evacuate their homes. Around 600 homes were destroyed by the Holiday Farm Fire.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, at least definitively. Residents in the area said that the fire was preceded by a power outage as well as an explosion of blue sparks from an electrical line near where the fire began. One resident said he thought it was a transformer that exploded. But nearly two years after the fire began, there is still no official word as to the cause.

Types of Harm Caused by Wildfires

Wildfires can cause a wide range of harm that can impact the area covered by the blaze for at least the foreseeable future. These types of harm include:

  • Agricultural losses
  • Property damage
  • PTSD
  • Burn injuries
  • Business losses
  • Lung-related illnesses
  • Erosion and other environmental damage
  • Degradation of species
  • Damage to water supplies

These are just a few of the ways an event like the Holiday Farm Fire can impact the local environment and community. Reach out to the Wildfire Law Center for legal advice.

What Types of Damages Can I Receive After a Wildfire?

You can pursue economic damages, non-economic damages, and potentially punitive damages after a wildfire.

Economic damages represent your financial losses such as lost wages, property damage, medical bills, and out-of-pocket expenses.

Non-economic damages represent the other consequences of the fire that are not as easy to quantify, such as pain and suffering, decrease enjoyment of life, emotional distress, and disfigurement.

Punitive damages aren’t usually awarded but could be available in a wildfire case. These damages “punish” the defendant for their behavior and deter the rest of society from acting similarly.

Even though almost two years have passed since the Holiday Farm Fire, the effects are still far-reaching and continue to impact the local community. You have six years in the State of Oregon to file a property damage claim, so there is still time to pursue compensation for your losses.

Your homeowner’s insurance policy might not be enough to cover your losses. The experienced wildfire attorneys with the Wildfire Law Center can help you negotiate a fair settlement that more accurately reflects the damage that the fire caused you and your family.

We work on a contingency fee basis, which incentivizes us to maximize the value of your claim. You won’t pay us anything up front; instead, we’ll receive payment as a percentage of the financial award we obtain for you.
