An Overview of the McBride Fire
The McBride Fire started burning on April 12, 2022, on Warrior Road in Ruidoso, New Mexico. The fire burned a total of 6,159 acres, destroying over 200 homes and resulting in two confirmed fatalities.
In mid-August 2022, it was reported that the fire was caused by a tree falling on a power line owned by the Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM), a public utility company. Lawsuits have already been filed against the utility and are currently ongoing as of August 2022.
The utility has initially responded by denying liability, saying that the tree that fell onto its powerline was outside of its right-of-way.

What Types of Damages Can I Recover After a Wildfire?
You can potentially recover economic, non-economic, and punitive damages after a wildfire.
The financial losses you’ve suffered due to the fire are represented by economic damages. These damages include your property damage, out-of-pocket expenses, repair costs, and more.
Non-economic damages are sometimes referred to as “pain and suffering” damages, and they are meant to compensate you for the consequences of the fire that are not as easy to quantify. Things like emotional distress, disfigurement, and loss of consortium qualify under this category.
While usually not awarded, punitive damages might be available in a McBride Fire lawsuit. These damages are meant to deter society from acting as the defendant did and are also meant to punish the at-fault party.
