Brief Overview of the Slater Fire
The Slater Fire began on September 8, 2020, near the Slater Butte Fire Lookout in the Klamath National Forest. It covered parts of both Southern Oregon and Northern California; together with the adjacent Devil Fire, it burned 157,229 acres. A total of 157 personnel were deployed to eventually contain the blaze; both fires were declared contained by November 16, 2020.
It is believed that the fire was caused by a tree hitting a power line owned by PacifiCorp, a utility company. It is alleged that after a high-winds warning was issued, other power companies deenergized their power lines in the area, but PacifiCorp did not. It is also alleged that the company failed to adequately manage the vegetation in the area.
People impacted by these fires have begun filing lawsuits against PacifiCorp. For information on filing your own lawsuit against the allegedly responsible utility company, reach out to the Wildfire Law Center for a free consultation.

What Damages Can I Claim After a Wildfire?
After a wildfire, you can potentially claim compensation for three types of damages: economic, non-economic, and punitive.
Economic damages are for the financial losses that the fire has caused you: lost wages, repair costs, out-of-pocket expenses, and property damage each fall under this category.
Non-economic damages aren’t so easy to quantify. Examples of non-economic damages include pain and suffering, emotional distress, disfigurement, and loss of enjoyment of life.
While rarely awarded, punitive damages might be available in a case arising from a wildfire. These damages are not meant to compensate you (though they do in effect) but are instead meant to punish the at-fault party for their conduct.
