A Brief Overview of the Zogg Fire

The Zogg Fire occurred in Shasta and Tehama Counties, California, in late September 2020. The fire burned 56,338 acres and was active for 16 days. It destroyed or damaged 231 structures and lead to four fatalities and one injury. CAL FIRE deployed three fire engines and 60 personnel to contain the fire.

It is believed that the fire started when a tree fell onto a distribution line owned by the Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E). In June 2022, PG&E was arraigned on 31 charges in a Redding courthouse after being sued by the two counties where the fire occurred. PG&E pleaded not guilty, and that case is still ongoing.

What Damages Can I Recover After a Wildfire?

You can potentially recover economic, non-economic, and punitive damages after a wildfire in California.

Economic damages compensate you for the consequences of the wildfire that are easy to quantify, such as property damage, repair costs, out-of-pocket expenses, and lost wages.

Non-economic damages are not as easy to assign a dollar value to. Examples of these damages include pain and suffering, emotional distress, and a decrease in enjoyment of life.

Punitive damages are rarely awarded but could be available in a wildfire lawsuit. These damages are intended to “punish” the at-fault party for their conduct and deter others from behaving similarly.

The experienced wildfire lawyers at the Wildfire Law Center can help you pursue compensation for every aspect of damages that the Zogg Fire has caused you and your family.
